There are hundreds of different bird species to be found on the Galapagos Islands. Some species are only found on these islands (endemic species) and others come and share the islands but also live elsewhere. I’m not sure where to start to describe all of the species our Naturalist Guides pointed out but for me , the Blue Footed Booby was the most interesting. The vast majority of the birds depend on the ocean for food, not only for themselves but to feed their chicks. We came across many nesting sites with either a female or male bird nurturing/guarding the chicks while the other member of the household circled the ocean for food. Once food was found, they returned to regurgitate the food and feed the chick..
These are some of the other bird species we encountered…
There were three types of Boobies we saw - the Red Footed, Nazca and the Blue Footed.
Below are the Red Footed Booby and Nazca Booby.
The Frigate birds
were a very interesting bird to observe. During mating season the males would display their beautiful red pouches in hopes of attracting a female to mate with.
After successfully finding a mate - time to share in the rearing of the chick.
The Blue Footed Booby
is one of the most photographed and observed birds in the Galapagos Islands. Also one of the most prominent birds you will find on T-Shirts in the souvenir shops.
They build their nests of dirt and poo (guano) - which they circle their nest with.
The name “Booby” comes from the Spanish word ‘bobo’ which means stupid.
Female Boobies choose male Boobies with the brightest blue feet because this means that they are healthy.
