Chau Doc
is located along banks of the Hau Giang River (Bassac River), and is a destination for travellers wanting to take the Mekong River route between Vietnam and Cambodia. It is a busy town with significant Chinese, Cham and Khmer communities. This cultural diversity is apparent in the mosques, temples, churches and nearby pilgrimage sites. Taking a boat trip to the Cham communities across the river or heading to the Tra Su Bird Sanctuary are other interesting options - we did both. After two days, we boarded the Victoria Speed Boat for the five hour boat trip on the Mekong River to Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Room with a View
The view from our hotel was amazing. Quickly you realize how important the Mekong River is to the livelihood of this area and the commerce of the country. Here are some of my photos.
Chau Doc Area
If you have the time, schedule two days in the Chau Doc area. You can climb up Sam Mountain and also go to the Tra Su Bird Sanctuary. A trip to the sanctuary and natural forest preserve is well worth it.
What do you do on a Saturday Night in Chau Doc? Drive around on your scooter and eat some street food - what else. Chau Doc, well worth a spot on a SE Asia itinerary.
