Guatemala, officially the Republic of Guatemala is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico in the north and Honduras and El Salvador in the south. With an estimated population of around 16.6 million, it is the most populated country in Central America. Guatemala is a representative democracy; its capital and largest city is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City.
Guatemala is a developing country and in that respect lacks the level of development and maintenance services we would expect to be normal. Traveling around the country is slow and time consuming. Roads are poorly maintained and not built for the current volume of traffic. A trip from Guatemala City Airport to Lake Atitlan (160kms/100miles) would take up to four hours.
It’s the beauty of the country and the beauty of the people that make a trip to Guatemala worthwhile.
Guatemala - Four Must Sees
If you ever get a chance to visit Guatemala, there are four highlights that would make your visit one to surely remember.
Lake Atitlan Antigua
Chichicastengo Tikal
Look for my next blog to show you photos of these “Four Must Sees”.
I spent some time at the waters edge of Lake Atitlan and watched how native families wash their clothes - nothing automatic here.
