Norway - Home of the Vikings

SCANDINAVIA, historically Scandia, part of northern Europe, generally held to consist of the two countries of the Scandinavian Peninsula, Norway and Sweden, with the addition of Denmark. Some authorities argue for the inclusion of Finland on geologic and economic grounds and of Iceland and the Faroe Islands on the grounds that their inhabitants speak North Germanic (or Scandinavian) languages related to those of Norway and Sweden. Typically, when these other areas are added to Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, the group is called the "Nordic Countries.”

Norway - I am starting on a trip to Norway and Denmark. Most of the trip will focus on the beautiful western coast of Norway where some of the worlds most spectacular fjords can be found. The trip will end in Denmark - after attending a Bruce Springsteen concert in Copenhagen. Going to see “The Boss”.

Norway - Past and Present

Always interesting to research some interesting facts on where ever you are going. Here are some brief facts about Norway you might not have know.

Past -

It wasn’t Christopher Columbus who first landed in North America in 1492. The Vikings from Scandinavia had already set up an settlement in Anse aux Meadows in North Western Newfoundland, Canada. Scientists say a new dating technique analysing tree rings has provided evidence that Vikings occupied a site in Newfoundland, Canada, in 1021AD. It has long been known that Europeans reached the Americas before Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492.

Anse aux Meadows

Present -

Norway isn't called Norway -
At least, not in Norwegian. Norway is the name of the country in the English language. In Norwegian, the country is called Norge. In fact, the full name of the country is actually the Kingdom of Norway.

The Naming Process in Norway - When you submit an application to name a newborn or to change a name, the National Population Register first decides whether a name is acceptable. Parents must submit their name choice before the child reaches six months old. Parents may not choose a first name for their child that may become a significant disadvantage for the child.

Electric Cars - By the year 2024, all taxis in Norway will have to be 100% electric. Also by the year 2025, all new cars purchased in Norway will have to be 100% electric.

Nobel Prizes - The Nobel Prizes for Chemistry, Literature, Physics and Medicine are awarded each year in Stockholm, Sweden - but there is one reserved for Oslo, Norway - The Nobel Peace Prize
