Óbidos
is one of Portugal’s most beautiful destinations and one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval villages or walled towns. Everywhere you turn is a postcard view, and that has inevitably made it one of the country’s most visited sites. Today, around two thousand people still live inside the walls of this ancient castle. Take a walk and you will find pretty whitewashed houses with gothic doorways, potted plants and bougainvillea. The walls surrounding this picturesque village were built in the 1300s, and although they were partly damaged in an earthquake in 1755, they were completely restored in the early 20th century.
It takes about 30 minutes to walk around the upper castle’s very narrow pathway. The views outside the wall are also beautiful.
Although Lisbon and Porto are listed as must see destinations of Portugal, there are many beautiful villages to visit throughout Portugal. Definitely put Obidos on that list. Even an overnight stay inside the castle walls would be a very cool idea.
