The Rainy Season
runs from November to April in Namibia. Roads can become treacherous, flooding common place and driving a definite adventure. This year happens to be one of the wettest and most destructive rainy season’s in the past 10 years.
Speed Kills -
Namibia is one of the countries with the highest vehicle fatality rates, in the world - standing at 23.9/100,000. Number one cause is speed - and perhaps road conditions too.
Damaraland
is a region located in the north-central part of Namibia. We started our two week self drive in this region and were amazed at the beauty of the terrain. This is the homeland of the Damara people and their hospitality was greatly appreciated. Damaraland is known for its diverse and unique wildlife that have adapted to the arid environment. If you're lucky you can see a Desert Elephant or maybe even the Black Rhino.
It was no easy feat finding these Elephants. Walking from water hole to water hole at a very deliberate pace, they are constantly eating as they follow the lead of the oldest female, often called the matriarch. She is the most experienced and dominant female, guiding the herd in areas like foraging, migration, and protection.
