The Castle Town of Monemvasia is one of Greece's most iconic landmarks. Located on the south eastern side of the Peloponnese Peninsula, it was entirely carved out on the back side of a sea rock in Medieval times. The town was not visible from the mainland, so that way the locals could avoid enemy attacks. Originally the only way to reach Monemvasia was by boat, but now a paved pathway connects the castle entrance to the mainland. This is how the name came to be, meaning single passage. A new town has been constructed on the mainland, just opposite the rock. Monemvasia is only a 25 minute drive from Aggelona, Dino's hometown.
New town, is the tourist hub for Monemvasia . Although there are also accommodations within the walled city, they tend to be fairly expensive. You will find a nice harbour, accommodations and many restaurants on the main land (New Town).
The hike around the island takes about an hour and gives you a totally different perspective of the island compared to the views from the top. There is a light house on the most easterly side.
The intricate layout of the walled city and the amazing views from the top of the island are spectacular. If you had a bucket list of just Greek locations, Monemvasia would definitely have to be on it.
Situated on very the top of the island is the Church of Asia Sofia. It has a grand view of the blue waters of the Aegean Sea. This church was built in the 12 century by the Byzantine emperor Andronicus II.
What an amazing trip to a beautiful part of Greece. No better way to experience the Greek Peloponnese Peninsula than with someone who's heart and soul never left. Now a Canadian, Dino's passion for his village and his county of birth - amazed me. The respect I saw from the people he greeted - was obvious. He and his wife Bessie have been providing financial support to their local church and to their village for many years - they never forgot the people they grew up with and left to start a new life in Canada. Thanks Dino, not only are you a great tour guide - but a very respected friend too.
