The Incredible Beauty of Namibia
Namibia
is a country of vast open spaces and incredible natural beauty. To the south lies a sea of towering dunes while further north the scenery shifts to rocky deserts with purple-tinted mountains. You can expect to see some of the largest sand dunes in the world. Around the Sossusvlei salt pan, dunes reach heights of over 656ft. The word ‘Namib’ means ‘vast place’, which feels very apt as Namibia is the second least populated country in the world. The Namib Desert is the oldest in the world - 80 million years old.
The history of Namibia has passed through several distinct stages from being colonised in the late nineteenth century to Namibia's independence on the 21st of March 1990. From 1884, Namibia was a German colony: German South West Africa. in April 1946, the United Nations, instituted a trusteeship system to reform the administration of the former League of Nations mandates and establish majority rule and independence as eventual goals for the trust territories.
