Nevada to St. Louis

Rocky Mountains

Continuing east, you cross the Continental Divide atop Colorado's Rocky Mountains.  This is the point where the watersheds drain west to the Pacific Ocean and east towards the Atlantic Ocean.  One of the most spectacular sections of the whole trip is when you cross the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.

Dodge City

As you neared the heart of America's Old Wild West, you had to let your imagination become part of the experience.  We visited Boot Hill Cemetery in Dodge City, Kansas and imagined how many of the cowboys who came there with the cattle drives of the 1880’s, met there fate in what was once called the Wildest Town in the Wild West.  One tombstone read “He drank too much and loved unwisely.”  What caused these western towns to become dilapidated and desperate to survive?  Who can say, I guess that is why they call this route – The Loneliest Road in America.

After Kansas, you head towards the true breadbasket of the USA.  But first you come to St. Louis with its spectacular Gateway Arch.  This 630' (192 m) ,monument is clad in stainless steel and built in the form of an inverted catenary arch.  It is the world' tallest arch.  The structure was built as a monument to the vision of Thomas Jefferson and St. Louis’ role in the westward expansion of the United States.
