Kolombangara Island - an interesting history
I stayed in a tiny Solomon village located on the volcanic island of Kolombangara - about a 40 minute boat ride from Gizo. The island’s name comes from an infamous “Head Hunter” by that name. Head Hunting was an actual practice and obviously practiced on this very island. Warriors from tribes that practiced this would kill their enemies and cut their heads off and place them in ceremony areas. Supposedly this gave them special powers. Sounds pretty gruesome - but no worries the practice ended long ago on Kolombangara. I hope I don't find any random skulls on my hike.
Below are a few morning and pictures of Kolombangara Island and the bay I stayed in. They were taken from the veranda of my leaf house.
