Lalomanu Beach is located along the southeastern coast of Samoa. I spent two days and one night at Taufau Beach Fales on this beautiful beach. This location is probably Samoa’s biggest tourist attraction. If you have an image of a beautiful South Pacific beach in your mind, this would be one.
There were two types of accommodation available at Taufau. You could stay in an open air Fale or one that was somewhat inclosed. A Fale is an open building that generally does not have any walls. It is found on the beaches and also in all the villages. Your aireconditioning is the ocean breeze as there won’t be any electricity for a fan. There where bathrooms and showers across the road.
Your stay at Taufau also included two family stye meals, a dinner and breakfast. This is where I realized that Taufau Fales must be listed in every travel guide book on Samoa. At our dinner there were people from eight different countries. If you ever make it to Samoa, this is the beach and location to experience.
I thought this was an interesting example of Samoan ingenuity. The Fales along the beach were weathered by the sun, wind and rain. To keep the leaf roofs intact, the Samoan's put this material on the roofs. Can you figure out what it is ?
The material on the roofs are sheets of rubber from a sandal manufacture. You can see the bottoms of the sandals have been stamped out of the sheet which is then recycled for use on the Fales.
Lalomanu Beach is worthy of its reputation as one of the South Pacific's most beautiful.
